Feb 12

The winners were:

Animal Care: Kimberley Carr

Childcare: Chelsea Brown

Sally Hudson, Vice Principal for Curriculum at the College, said: “These awards are one of my favourite events in the academic calendar. They are a very important celebration of excellence, achievement and endeavour by students across the College.

“The awards are not always about academic excellence. It may be a combination of attendance, punctuality, supporting other students, succeeding against the odds and simply being the very best you can be.

“These students are just the tip of the iceberg with regards to the hard work and effort that is going on throughout the College. There have been a large number of students considered and nominated for these awards, so these winners should be very proud.”

Social Use of Houghall Conference Hall
by Ian Hall - Friday, 27 January 2012, 03:59 PM

Dear Houghall Students

Through the student voice and learner consultations you have told us that you needed a social space to use at lunchtimes and after lessons prior to catching the bus.

I have talked to Beth Pearson and your Student Union reps and we have agreed as a trial to open the Conference Hall between 12.15pm - 1.10pm and 3.30pm - 4.50pm from Monday 30th January.

I must ask you to take care of and respect the room as it is our biggest space and is also used as a classroom and by outside groups for talks and conferences.

In order to ensure that the Hall is used sensibly I would ask that students from each subject area take charge for one of the days and ensures that there is no damage and that it is left clean and tidy after each session.

You will also notice that support worker staff and members of the teaching staff will help with this and the staff shown on the rota below will be present to ensure that the facility is treated with care.

If you need to report any incidents or need help I would ask you then contact the staff on “duty”.

I am looking at a more permanent area for you to use as long as this trial goes well.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Students Rewarded For 100% Attendance
by Admin User - Friday, 13 January 2012, 08:57 AM
East Durham College, with campuses in Peterlee and Durham, recently presented over 250 of its students with the cash reward for achieving a 100% attendance and 99% or above punctuality to lectures during their first term.

The College introduced their ‘Attend & Earn’ award as part of a raft of measures to help students following the Government’s decision back in January 2011 to scrap the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

The College also vastly expanded their free college bus services, as the majority of students used the EMA payments for transport to get to college.

Mark Moore, Director of Student Services, said: “We felt it was important to introduce a number of initiatives as over 70% of our students received EMA.

“We are delighted at so many managed to meet the attendance target and received the new payment. We will be offering similar incentives for the next two terms so students have the chance to continue to earn while they learn.

Local MP for Easington, Grahame Morris, added: “The decision of the coalition government to scrap EMA was an attack on the aspirations of young people across the North East and flies in the face of promises to improve social mobility.”

“I welcome the response of East Durham College to this difficult situation to provide their own support for disadvantaged young people to continue in education.”
